The difference between IPS and TN displays

2024-04-10

IPS (In-Plane Switching) and TN (Twisted Nematic) are the two most common technologies in current LCD displays. They each have their own pros and cons, and I’ll detail the differences between them below.

1.Perspective

Viewing angle refers to whether the color and brightness of the screen change when you view the screen from different angles. IPS displays perform better in this regard, providing a wider viewing angle and maintaining picture clarity and accuracy even when viewed from the side or up and down. The TN display screen performs poorly in this regard. When viewed from an oblique angle, the brightness and color of the screen will change.

2.Reaction speed

Response speed is usually used to describe how fast the screen refreshes. TN displays have faster response times, typically requiring only 2-5 milliseconds, making TN displays more suitable for processing fast-moving images and videos. IPS displays are relatively slow in this regard, with response times usually requiring more than 6 milliseconds, which means that when dealing with high-speed moving scenes, problems such as blur and image retention may occur.

3. Color expression

The color performance of IPS display is more accurate than that of TN display, and it can present more colors and details. IPS displays can typically achieve a color depth of 8-bit or higher, which means it can render a wider range of tones and shades. TN displays usually only have 6-bit color depth, which means that the color gradient may not be smooth during the display process.

4. Price

Generally speaking, TN displays are much cheaper than IPS displays. This is because the cost of TN technology is relatively low and the production process is relatively simple, so TN displays can be sold at a lower price. IPS displays require more advanced and complex manufacturing processes and materials, so they are more expensive.

5.Energy consumption

IPS displays are generally more energy efficient than TN displays because IPS displays require less backlight and power supply, making them consume less energy. At the same time, the IPS display can also adapt to brightness and automatically adjust the brightness according to the light intensity of the current environment, thereby further reducing energy consumption.

6. Color saturation

IPS displays have better color saturation than TN displays and are more accurate in displaying colors. This means that the IPS display can present more realistic and beautiful images.

7.Contrast

The IPS display performs better in terms of contrast, with higher black depth and white brightness, making the image clearer and with richer details. TN displays, on the other hand, are relatively weak and often struggle to achieve extremely high black depth and white brightness.

8.Response speed

Although the TN display has a faster response speed, screen tearing may occur due to the refresh method it uses. The IPS display does not have this problem, there will be no screen tearing, and there will be no problems such as image retention and blurring.

9.Visual offset

When you view an IPS display, the image on the screen will not be distorted no matter which angle you view it from. When you watch a TN display, there may be a visual shift, that is, the image is stretched or compressed and loses its original proportions.

10.Brightness uniformity

IPS displays perform better in terms of brightness uniformity. This means that the brightness distribution is relatively even across the entire screen, and there will be no dark corners or bright spots. TN displays are relatively weak in this regard and usually have obvious brightness unevenness.

11.Touch screen adaptability

IPS displays perform better when it comes to touch screens because they offer wider viewing angles and no color distortion when touched. TN displays may suffer from color distortion and image deformation.

12.Rendering speed

When dealing with complex 3D rendering tasks, IPS displays generally perform better because of their high color accuracy and contrast, allowing for more detailed images. The TN display may have problems such as inaccurate colors and lack of details.

13. Energy saving degree

IPS displays are better than TN displays in terms of energy saving because IPS displays use advanced backlight technology, which makes them consume less energy. At the same time, the IPS display also has an adaptive brightness function, which can automatically adjust the brightness according to the ambient light, thereby saving more energy.

In short, there are some differences between IPS and TN displays in terms of viewing angle, response speed, color performance, price, etc. The appropriate display should be selected based on actual needs. If you need high color reproduction, contrast and viewing angles, then IPS display is a better choice; if you are pursuing fast response time and low latency, or have a limited budget, then TN display A screen might suit you better.
